On view in the Davis Gallery November 13 through December 5, 2025
Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, November 13 from 6:00-7:00 PM

Tenaculum is an exploration of my personal experience getting a copper IUD (Paragard) and how I was let down by the doctors who dismissed the pain of the procedure. A tenaculum is a common gynecological tool that is used during procedures like an IUD insertion. Inspired by the shape of an American Civil War bullet extractor, the device has not changed much since the 19th century. While alternative devices have been created, they are not readily available.
This exhibition explores experiences of pain and the deep shame around sexuality when you present femininely. The artworks on display cross the boundaries of many different mediums, to ask why “women” are burdened with expectations of composure and poise while enduring such pain.
