Botanical Paintings in the University Art Collections

By Abigail Kopetzky, Graduate Class of 2026 In January and September of 2025, the University of Denver received two groups of botanical paintings from different donors. The paintings appear on handmade paper, numbered in the top right corner. Most of the painted flowers are accompanied by their contemporary Latin names. The depicted flowers represent both the Old and New World, with examples from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. A previous owner brought one group of paintings to an art historian who specialized in flower still-lifes. Based on stylistic similarity to other botanical drawings in the period, he dated the paintings to approximately 1618.   Early handmade paper was made using cotton and linen rags, which were beaten and processed into a...

Davis Gallery Exhibition: Matters of the Mind

On view April 2 through May 3, 2026 in the Davis Gallery By sharing depictions of mental health struggles, the Matters of the Mind exhibition offers windows into experiences with mental illness and reflections of shared experiences. Please join the Vicki Myhren Gallery and Davis Gallery to celebrate the openings of several new exhibitions across our galleries. Free parking is available in Lot L across the street from Shwayder Art Building. The Vicki Myhren Gallery presents two pop-up exhibitions featuring recent acquisitions by acclaimed artists Enrique Chagoya and Duane Michals. By Garrett Schroeder, Graduate Class of 2027 Best known for their work making posters advertising concerts in the San Francisco Bay area, Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse created this design advertising a two-night show at the now-defunct Family Dog music Venue in Denver. This show featured The Other Half and Sons of Champlin, two popular rock bands who were active mainly in San Francisco but had traveled to Denver with the promise of a burgeoning music scene.  As equal partners, Kelley designed the layout, while Mouse did the drawing and coloring.
