John E. Thompson (b. 1882) was a pioneering artist who served on the DU faculty from 1929 to his death in 1945. This exhibition gathers together paintings, sketches, and drawings from DU’s permanent art collection and other regional sources. Master Watercolors is the last of three exhibitions curated this season by students in a museum studies class at DU’s School of Art & Art History (SAAH). The works on display span more than a century of painting, 1885-2005, by artists as diverse as Albert Bierstadt (1891), John Singer Sargent (1906), Marsden Hartley (1924), Elizabeth Spalding (1930), Vance Kirkland (1946), and Jan Perry Mayer (2009). A fully illustrated catalog written by student curators Janie Askew, Kathryn Ninneman, and Caitlin Whaley will be available at the reception.
