The installation for Visual Trips has finally been launched. Gallery staff and DU students began the project of inventorying and cataloguing more than 800 pieces on loan to the university in December 2013. Dr. Scott Montgomery, the exhibition’s curator, has worked with Director of the Vicki Myhren Gallery, Dan Jacobs, to select over 200 posters and original production material (original drawings, photographs, mechanical drawings and acetate sheets) to create an exhibition supporting his recent research which illustrates how artists defined the visual component of the psychedelic scene as it unfolded. From there, Collections Manager, Sabena Kull began the process of coordinating framing, matting and transport of the pieces to the gallery in preparation for installation – no small feat. In addition to corralling the artwork, Sabena worked closely with Dan, Scott and the graduate gallery assistants the exhibition layout in preparation for the subsequent wall-moving, patching and painting to prepare the space for installation. Now that the opening is imminent, the entire gallery team is on hand working to hang pieces, light and make final adjustments.
There are plenty of special effects and surprises in store for gallery visitors. Come prepared for a rich visual atmosphere and experience original 4D posters in motion! Doors open next Thursday, October 2, for an opening reception from 5 to 8 P.M. Please join the staff of the Vicki Myhren Gallery to kick off the final exhibition celebrating the Sesquicentennial of the University of Denver in style. Psychedelic music will be provided by Bill Pohl and colorful drinks and light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to everyone. The exhibition will run from October 3 through November 16.
