University of Denver Art Collections Acquisition Guidelines and Polices
The University of Denver Art Collections (UAC) collects objects that are in line with our mission, diversify the collection, are art historically significant, and resonate with the greater DU community. As an academic institution, the use of objects in curriculum and research is a high priority. We strive to collect objects that can be activated on campus and further the educational goals of the University of Denver.
The UAC is committed to the highest standards of ethical and professional practice. When considering potential acquisitions, our scholars and students conduct research to assess the object’s provenance, historical significance, and application at the University of Denver.
The UAC will not acquire any work that is in violation of the laws of the United States, any work that was illegally exported from its country of origin, or any work that was obtained by seizure during times of war, rebellion, or unrest. We are dedicated to conducting provenance research on objects in our collection. We will respond promptly to any cultural property claims and investigate thoroughly any evidence found that indicates the object was obtained unethically.
The UAC follows the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Ethical Guidelines on the Acquisition of Archaeological Materials and Ancient Art, the AAMD Guidelines on the Stewardship of Sacred Objects, the 1970 UNESCO Convention on Cultural Property, and the AAM Code of Ethics as our foundation for ethical collecting practices. We also recognize and follow all procedures and best practices set by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
