Making Art / Making Community

Home / Making Art / Making Community
Opening Reception: March 8th, 5-8pm
March 8 – April 29, 2018

This exhibition centers on artists using social bridging strategies in their artmaking through participatory experiments, humorous critiques, and collaborative craft. These artists pull tactics from social science, psychology, education and design thinking. Referred to as “social practice” these artists use human relations as their artistic medium rather than a studio based creative practice.

This exhibition particularly focuses on artists transforming our interactions and perceptions of public space. Paul Shortt’s project, Reserved for Loitering, distributes yard signs to be installedby visitors in public spaces investigating the concept of loitering and encouraging a reclamation of public space.

The New Craft Artists in Action (NCAA) assembles handmade basketball nets for empty hoops, usually knitted or crocheted, to build proactive and inclusive relationships between artists, athletes and neighbors.
