This year’s selections were made by a distinguished alumna, artist Viviane Le Courtois (MA, Art History, 2000). An artist, art administrator and creative entrepreneur in the regional art community, Viviane acted as juror for the show, viewing hundreds of images submitted by DU students and selecting works by the 24 artists listed at right. She also chose artworks to honor with a Juror’s Award and Honorable Mentions. That so many works met her rigorous standards is a credit to the creative talents of our students. I thank her for performing this time-consuming task. Viviane has exhibited widely, both in regionally and internationally. To see some of her recent work, I encourage you to visit her upcoming exhibition at the Denver Botanic Gardens; Raw, Cooked, Fermented will be on view there from May 25 – July 31.
Catherine Chauvin, director of the School of Art & Art History, has chosen another artwork for the Director’s Purchase Award. This adds an exceptional student work to the University Art Collections, where it will become part of our record of DU student achievement in the visual arts. I would like to thank Catherine for this gesture, which benefits both the University and the selected artist. The exhibition was conceived by the members of the Faculty Gallery Committee of the SAAH: Catherine Chauvin, Rafael Fajardo, Sarah Gjertson, Annabeth Headrick, and Roddy MacIness. Their commitment to an annual showcase of student work helps to ensure that, every May, we are able to provide a professional-quality venue for the work of aspiring artists. This commitment extends to the display of work by graduating seniors who are receiving departmental awards from the School of Art & Art History (on view in the lobby of our building). We are also glad to acknowledge the Emergent Digital Practices program for coordinating their showcase of student work in digital media with our opening event on May 12.
