Duane Michals: Photographs
February 21 – March 31, 2013
The sequential images of New York-based photographer Duane Michals address literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality. According to Michals, “I am an expressionist and by that I mean I’m not a photographer or a writer or a painter or a tap dancer, but rather someone who expresses himself according to his needs.” Avoiding what he calls a journalistic approach, he prefers to think of himself as a short story writer. Inspired throughout his career by the works of Walt Whitman, he has introduced sensuality, sentimentality, and humor reminiscent of the great American poet into many of his important works. Achieving a rare level of success in both fine art and commercial photography, he is considered a pioneer of the combination of text and image in the medium. The Myhren Gallery is pleased to welcome Michals (B.A. 1953) back to the University of Denver as a distinguished alumnus.
